On Being Water
In a flowing river, when water laps up against stone and crashes into it, the water never breaks on impact. Our spirits are the same — unbreakable, ever-lasting.
Water is both ancient and new through Earth's natural hydrological cycle. This cycle involves processes such as evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and infiltration, which move water around the planet in a constant loop. Water that exists today has been around for millions of years, circulating through various forms and locations, from oceans and rivers to clouds and rain, and even living organisms. Like water, we are made up of ancient particles, yet we are renewed daily through life’s currents.
This “Being Water” photo essay honors the parallels between the movement of water and our change-scapes; we, like H2O, are always in flow. This dynamic rhythm is embodied in abacaxi's Spring-Summer 2024 collection, "Water." Crafted with meticulous attention to artisanal details from India and Peru, the collection is set against the historic colonial backdrop of Calle Tumbamuertos in Cartagena, Colombia. It features striking pieces such as an ombré gingham print dress, a backless tee hand-embellished with tropical fruits, and a sari-inspired tie-dye dress, each symbolizing a blend of tradition and transformation. Captured here on 35mm film in this humid, saturated setting, the collection invites us to reflect on the fluidity and transient aspects of our lives, and ultimately see ourselves as beings of water.
